Supplements More Effective for Heartburn
Heartburn is unfortunately a daily occurrence for many Americans. There are many remedies available, from over the counter chewable calcium to prescriptions from the doctor. Now a new study indicates that a combination of vitamins, amino acids, and melatonin was more effective for heartburn than a popular brand of over the counter heartburn relief.
This study involved 351 patients who already had symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). 175 of these people received the combination of vitamins, amino acids, and melatonin supplements, and the other 176 received the over the counter drug “omeprazole.”
Both groups of people were studied for 40 days, and the effectiveness of the supplements and the omeprazole was measured by how quickly (in number of days) the patients had a 24 hour period with no symptoms of heartburn or GERD. The results showed that the group taking the supplements had relief from the heartburn symptoms much sooner than the people taking the omeprazole. The supplements group had results after only seven days, and 100 percent of the participants in the group receiving supplements finished the trial, and 100 percent of them reported that they no longer had symptoms of heartburn or GERD.
This is in contrast to the group receiving the omeprazole. This group took nine days to report a 24 hour period with no symptoms of heartburn or GERD. Also, after the 40 day trial was over only 65.7 percent of them had no symptoms, 2.3 percent reported they had some relief of symptoms, and the remaining participants had no change in their symptoms.
The omeprazole group also reported more side effects, with two participants who dropped out of the trial due to constant headaches. The group receiving supplements reported drowsiness as their only side effects, but they also reported that the quality of their sleep was much improved.
This clinical trial shows that supplements are an excellent choice for heartburn, which affects up to 44 percent of American adults. The combination of multivitamins, amino acids, and melatonin can safely be taken together. Melatonin is recommended to be taken only at bed time, since it may increase sleepiness and help you fall asleep.
